Middle Class Millionaires

Q: I need to cut my household budget by about $125 per month. Where should I start.

A:

Start by not spending as much. JUST KIDDING. (I couldn’t help it.)
Many people have found that tightening their financial belt is more difficult than they first thought. For a family of four, many experts estimate that they can shave $100 to $150 per month off their food bill by implementing two simple rules. 1: Never go shopping without a list. 2: Never buy anything that’s not on the list.
This seemingly silly process will prevent impulse buying and force you to plan your food needs before you get in the store. Remember that the grocery industry spends millions upon millions of dollars every year figuring out how to get you to buy more than you really need. That’s why the store layout changes so often (so you have to wander more), that’s why the deli cooks food on-site, filling the air with aroma (to make you hungry) and that’s why the the end caps (displays at the end of each isle) are often perceived as “Sales” and are more often than not high profit impulse items. Try the two rules above and you’ll be surprised at how much you can save. Let me warn you though. It will be harder than you think. Chances are that you are like most of us and buy a significant portion of your groceries on impulse or on a whim. Can you say Twinkies, gum, the National Inquirer or candy bars at the check-out stand? Give this a try and let us know your experience. (It worked well for my family.) I’m betting that the $125 dollars you are seeking will drop right out of your food budget and to the bottom line.
